Workshops/Meetings in the Area
October 2011
Today, it is estimated that one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the United States and tens of millions worldwide are affected by autism. Government statistics suggest the prevalence rate of autism is increasing 10-17% annually. In short, it is hard to find a person whose life has been untouched by autism.
It is in this spirit that the North Shore Community College’s Tolerance Committee is proud to welcome you to the 28th Annual Forum on Tolerance to be held on Thursday, November 3rd in the Lynn Campus Gymnasium (300 Broad Street, Lynn, MA) from 8:30am-12:30pm. This Forum is entitled Weaving Autism into Our Social Fabric and will feature an array of speakers and panels.
Author and activist Shonda Schilling, wife of baseball great Curt Schilling, will be speaking about raising a son with autism. Her talk is part of a morning-long program designed to show how autism affects individuals, their care-givers and society. Psychologist Dr. Karen Levine will describe the characteristics, strengths, challenges and treatments of autism. Former State Representative Barbara L’Italien will talk about her legislative efforts to help children on the autism spectrum. North Shore Community College President Dr. Wayne Burton will lead a panel discussion. Additionally, Northeast Arc will present an art exhibit of works by individuals with autism. Ms. Schilling will speak at 11:30am, followed by a book-signing of The Best Kind of Different: Our Family’s Journey with Asperger’s.
This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available at the Lynn MBTA Commuter rail Station. Please join us for this thought-provoking and important event. For more information, please contact Dr. Sheldon Brown at 781-593-6722 x6294.
